Gay marriage amendment fails rights test
By Editor02/29/2004
Many have thus far weighed in on President Bush's proposed marriage amendment. Aside from the political arguments in favor or against such an amendment, I see a major flaw in taking this issue to the Constitution.

Courting Religious Discrimination

Gay Marriage Definitely A Wedge Issue Among Democrats
By Edward E.J. Davis02/26/2004
Karl Rove has to be drinking a little champagne tonight. The gay marriage issue has shown just how tenuous the unified Democratic Party theory really is, but whether or not gay marriage becomes the wedge issue Republicans hope it'll be depends on how clearly Democrats can see the forest from the trees.

Bush on wrong side of history with marriage amendment
By Mike Thomas02/26/2004
The Wall Street Journal editorial page the other day featured a column by a Harvard law professor touting the anti-gay marriage amendment that was recently endorsed by President Bush. In the article, the professor defines gay marriage as special benefits for a group of relatively affluent households, most of which have two earners and are not raising children.

Homosexuals Not Winning Hearts and Minds
By Darren Copeland02/24/2004
As a person who could really care less who marries whom, same-sex proponents aren't doing a very good job at making me sympathetic to their cause. And that is the 100,000 pound elephant in the room no one is talking about. In California, 61% of the population voted against same-sex marriage. 61% You not only win an election with 61%, you pass a test. 61% is a huge number, but same-sex proponents ignore that gi-normous majority. The percentage of people opposed to same-sex marriage is even bigger when you start talking about the rest of the country, approaching 70%.

Guest worker program invites amnesty seekers
By Editor02/24/2004
His critics certainly saw it. For an immigration plan that attempts to deal with the very real aspect of illegal immigration, the plan has already failed. President Bush's new immigration proposal, which would open to illegal immigrants jobs which they already do, does not grant amnesty. But tell that to the illegal immigrants now crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in record numbers.

Environmentalists Sue EPA Over Weedkiller
By Mike Pechar02/23/2004
Acting almost ritualistic, an environmental group is using a we-can't-afford-to-wait legal argument to sue the Environmental Protection Agency over use of the weedkiller atrazine. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) sued the EPA last August because a judge ruled in the previous January that atrazine was flowing into streams in Washington state and harming salmon. Therefore, the government was ruled to have violated the Endangered Species Act and the judge ordered cutbacks on the use of atrazine near salmon-bearing rivers and streams.

The Real Nader Threat
By Michael Hussey02/22/2004
Ralph Nader is a dangerous man. Indeed, he is a threat to the Republican-Democrat hegemony, but the real danger he poses exists because of his willingness to exploit the frustration people have with their ineffective government, all in order to push an even more dangerous regime upon us. While he properly identifies the natural results of an over bloated state apparatus, he assumes a tone of moral superiority while preaching that the answer to these problems is more government though you will never hear him call his solution by its real name: socialism.

Can Nader Defeat Bush?
By Edward E.J. Davis02/22/2004

Canada Denies Asylum to Defector
By Mike Pechar02/21/2004
The story of Song Dae Ri is somewhat disturbing. Mr. Ri was a North Korean trade official working in their Beijing embassy in 2001 when he defected to Canada with his wife and young son. Since then, his wife was lured back to North Korea and executed for treason, his son was granted asylum, and Mr. Ri has been branded as a war criminal not entitled to Canada's protection. However,

Marriage and the State Get a Divorce
By Michael Hussey02/13/2004
This entire gay marriage hubbub has me thinking. In modern civilization, the institution of family is unquestionably important for the health and happiness of every individual. Even if you disagree with gay marriage, you should be able to empathize with a gay persons desire to have the same rights as a heterosexual couple. The issue is coming to a head, and whatever the outcome, I doubt there will be a revolutionary change in the way society at large operates. I am still interested in a positive outcome, which is why I decided to write this article.

Gay Marriage is Inevitable
By Stephen Macklin02/12/2004
I haven't written anything about the whole gay marriage issue either here or at my personal blog, because basically, I don't care. But with everything that is going on in Massachusetts and San Francisco it is clear that this issue is not going to fade away. I am going to ignore for now the judicial hubris of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, and the extra legal activities of the San Francisco County Clerk. As wrong as their actions are, in the end that won't matter. In the end - however far in the future that is - gays will marry.

Begin Massachusetts countdown
By I.J. Reilly02/09/2004
As we saw in Vermont and Hawaii, the pattern for those trying to redefine marriage has been top-down. Their people in power -- be they judges, governors, or other officials -- maneuver to claim that equality requires sodomy to be put on par with normal people and then issue their fiat. This is of necessity because the overwhelming majority of people still think that marriage is between one man and one woman. In Hawaii, there was an amendment to the state constitution. In Vermont, the legislature created "civil unions" and then were stunned to find themselves voted out of office at the next elections.

Bush's National Guard service
By Mike Thomas02/06/2004
President Bush still has a lot of explaining to do concerning his National Guard service 30-plus years ago. The charge that he was AWOL (absent without leave) is technically incorrect in that there is no evidence he was ever charged with such an offense and the fact that he eventually received an honorable discharge from the service would be inconsistent with someone guilty of that crime.

Privacy Law Prevents Gun Background Checks
By Mike Pechar02/05/2004
Under the concealed-carry gun law signed by Gov. Taft, people who have been committed to mental-health facilities are to be denied permits. However, sheriff's department investigators are only able to determine if a person has been committed to a facility when it was done in accordance with a court order. There is no way to determine the number or names of those committed by a family member or guardian due to the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). As federal law, all hospitals, clinics and other health-care providers are prohibited by HIPAA from releasing patient medical records.
