Impressions of China: The changes of globalization

By Hunter Williams
07/30/2004

While sailing down China’s Yangzi River this summer, I witnessed the strange spectacle of entire towns carefully being deconstructed. Brick by brick, they are being relocated to higher ground in anticipation of the waters rising upstream of the massive Three Gorges Dam. Ways of life have been broken apart and put back together a few hundred yards up the bank in a way reminiscent of the old but not quite familiar.

Can the Conventions

By Damon Dimmick
07/27/2004

"Dance, puppets, dance," may as well be the message of the Democratic Convention this year. Let's face it, modern party conventions serve no purpose other than framing an already-anointed nominee in the best light possible.

Gore still wrong about Bush stealing 2000

In the bitter tone that we've all grown accustomed to these last four years, Al Gore once again reminded us today that Bush stole the 2000 presidential election.

Newsweek: Younger voters will tune out Democratic convention

By Editor
07/24/2004

According to a recent Newsweek poll, younger voters prefer the liberal Kerry over the conservative Bush 48-41. The under-30s also overwhelmingly say (90 percent) that it matters who wins this November’s election.

Kucinich to Speak at Convention

By Mike Pechar
07/23/2004

Having collected a few delegates and weathered the entire primary campaign, Congressman Dennis Kucinich will be given time at the speaker's podium during next week's Democratic National Convention. Oh, goody! Also, during convention week, Kucinich plans on conducting workshops on how to find world peace. I imagine this effort will entail more Kumbaya than substantive dialogue.

Non-Retraction: US vs. Sweden

By I.J. Reilly
07/22/2004

A particular Swede, who has apparently doused an all-American woman with camphor and drug her to Sweden where she must spend all day catering to the illiterate drunkards that make up the country, has alerted me to an error in my U.S. vs Sweden post below.

Helmets To Hardhats

By Stephen Macklin
07/14/2004

There are those such as columnist and cartoonist Ted Rall and some residents of Bainbridge Island near Seattle Washington whose idea of supporting our troops includes crass insults and generally holding them and their profession in utter contempt. The current Democrat candidate for the presidency once testified before congress accusing his fellow soldiers of litany of atrocities. There is probably a significant portion of the population that genuinely supports the troops in combat, but doesn't give them a second thought once the fighting is over. But thankfully, and rightfully, these examples are not representative of all of America.

Hang Saddam Now

By Jeff Myhre
07/09/2004

The consensus that Saddam Hussein should be tried for his crimes is a dangerous and naïve one. The quicker he dances at the end of a rope, the better for everyone, and the better for the rule of law as well. A trial gives the world community a façade of legality for the upcoming execution. But it carries a heavy price, and the price is not worth it.

Bill Cosby's "tirade"

By Mike Thomas
07/02/2004

Famed comedian Bill Cosby had some good advice for black America the other day. Unfortunately, the Associated Press labeled his comments as a “tirade,” and the rest of the national media has jumped on that bandwagon to portray him as some kind of crank with nothing but “harsh words” for the black community.

Mine the media

By Charles Sanson
07/01/2004

Media coverage of last Sunday's attack on an Israeli army outpost near a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip by Hamas and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade is instructive on a number of levels. The militants "had dug a 350-meter long tunnel, and detonated 150 kilograms of explosives underneath the outpost," reports Ha'aretz. The LATimes adds that the bombs were detonated by "remote control." The explosion caused the structure to collapse, killing one soldier and injuring five others.
