Bush: U.S. is addicted to oil

by on February 1st, 2006

In his State of the Union address, Bush said “America is addicted to oil” and proposed an alternative energy program aimed at reducing foreign imports.

He also chastised Democratic critics of his Iraqi war policies for embracing “defeatism.”

“The United States will not retreat from the world, and we will never surrender to evil,” the president declared during a 51-minute speech that was interrupted by applause more than 50 times.

Bush underscored his commitment to advancing the cause of liberty across the Middle East and unleashing free-market forces at home, but his speech lacked the ambitious sweep of previous addresses that promised major changes in domestic policy.
