Carter to campaign with Dean in Iowa

by on January 14th, 2004

Not to be outdone by Al Gore or Bill Bradley, former President Jimmy Carter is set to campaign with Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean in Iowa the night before the caucuses. But Carter’s making it clear it’s not an outright endorsement.

Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi said they don’t expect Carter to make an endorsement but are excited about appearing with the former president so close to voting in Iowa. Carter has said he will not express any preference about who should be the nominee.

However, Carter’s appearance with Dean is endorsement enough for me. The mere fact that he decided to campaign with the doctor and not with the other candidates clearly shows where his support lies. And aside from the specifics of an endorsement, it should be a big boost for Dean as his lead over other Democratic candidates lessens.
