Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has proposed a plan to disengage unilaterally from the majority-Palestinian Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.
The proposal has proven extremely controversial, both with the Palestinians – who object to the action being unilateral – and with Mr Sharon’s own centre-right Likud party, Jewish settlers and their allies.
Israeli parties on the left have backed the plan – which originated with the Labour party – and polls suggest the Israeli public supports it.
