Great Bad Ideas of History

President Bush spoke today in support of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

After more than two centuries of American jurisprudence and millennia of human experience, a few judges and local authorities are presuming to change the most fundamental institution of civilization.

Subtract a few centuries from the millennia of human experience and it was the universally held belief of civilization that the Earth was not only flat but that it was the center of the universe. Leeches and bleeding were state of the art medicine.

Subtract only a portion of the two centuries of American jurisprudence and you come across another fundamental part of civilization that had been a part of every culture on the planet. Slavery. It took a bloody and brutal civil war to change the millennia old belief that people can be held as property. I hope we can resolve this issue without it coming to that.
