BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Iraq’s National Election Commission announced Sunday the nation’s first post-Saddam vote will take place on January 30, a sign of Iraqi and U.S. determination to hold elections as scheduled — despite a continued insurgency.

The elections will be to choose an Iraqi national assembly, a Kurdish national assembly and 18 provincial governing councils, a commission spokesman said.

Under Iraq’s transitional administration law, which governs Iraq’s transition from an interim government to a permanent government, elections must take place on or before January 30, 2005.
